261　exceptional，rare，scarce，unusual和unique

① exceptional表示“異常的，例外的（褒義）”。

Stevie Wonder was considered an exceptional talent at ten. 史蒂威·旺達十歲時被認為是非凡的天才。

② rare表示長期以來難得一見的東西，貴重的，珍稀的。

That rare bird could speak many languages and sing 12 operas. 那只珍稀的鳥能說多種語言，唱十二段歌劇。

③ scarce表示由于短缺、少見而稀有，指物時，scarce與rare有時可以通用。

He has a scarce/rare collection of books/coins. 他有珍本書/錢幣珍品的收藏。

提示

scarce 有時更側重在價值不高、供不應求的事物上，而 rare 往往側重在珍貴、珍稀上。

Because of the bad weather，vegetables were scarce last winter. 由于天氣惡劣，去年冬天蔬菜供應不足。（這句中 scarce 不能用 rare代替）

That's my rare chance/occasion/time to meet a beautiful girl at my office in person. 我難得有那么一個機會/時機/時間在自己辦公室親自接待一個漂亮的女孩。（句中的 rare 也不宜用 scarce 代替）

④ unusual表示稀有、罕見，是中性詞，好壞事物都能用。

Such beautiful voice is unusual. 這種優(yōu)美的嗓音是少有的。

The boy is unusual today，for he seldom behaves so rudely. 這男孩今天不正常，因為他難得表現得這么粗暴。

⑤ unique表示獨一無二，與exceptional 類似，但unique指好壞事都行，比exceptional更強調與眾不同。

Hemingway's style is terse，forceful and unique to himself. 海明威的風格是簡潔、有力、標新立異的。

Doing drugs among the teenagers is unique in this country. 這個國家青少年吸毒是別處難以相比的。
