① 通常用and連接兩個(gè)形容詞時(shí),是表示兩個(gè)形容詞的對(duì)等或平行,如:a blue and white flag(藍(lán)白旗);但如果第一個(gè)形容詞是good,nice,lovely,或fine等,和“and+另一形容詞或副詞”連用,便構(gòu)成慣用短語,意為“非常,完全”,相當(dāng)于very,completely,rather,作副詞用法。在美式口語中,此類表現(xiàn)法很多,用以強(qiáng)調(diào)。
The man is good/nice and bad. 那人很壞。
Jim is good/fine and hungry. 吉姆餓極了。
I know him good and well. 我非常了解他。
The room was nice and cool. 這個(gè)房間十分涼爽。
The cloth feels nice and soft. 這布摸起來很軟。
The car is running nice and fast. 這車子跑得極快。
After the long walk we were good and tired. 經(jīng)過長途跋涉之后,我們很累了。(=tired out)
The tower is nice and high. 那座塔很高。
The living-room is nice and cosy. 這個(gè)起居室非常舒適。
The study is lovely and warm. 這間書房很暖和。
② it is no good后常跟動(dòng)名詞,但也可跟不定式。
It is no good trying again. 再試也沒有用。
I knew it was no good to say anything. 我知道說什么也沒有用。
