GRANDFATHER'S STORY

"Come and sit by my knee, Jane,

“簡(jiǎn)，過(guò)來(lái)坐在我的膝旁。

and grandfather will tell you a strange story.

爺爺給你講一個(gè)神奇的故事。”

"One bright Summer day,

“一個(gè)明媚的夏日，

I was in a garden in a city, with a friend. "

我和一位朋友在一座城市花園里，

We rested underneath a fig tree.

坐在無(wú)花果樹下休息，

The broad leaves were green and fresh.

大片的樹葉綠而青。

"We looked up at the ripe, purple figs.

“我們抬頭看著已經(jīng)成熟的紫色無(wú)花果。

And what do you think came down through the branches of the fig tree over our heads?"

如果有東西從無(wú)花果樹的樹枝上掉到我們頭上，你覺(jué)得會(huì)是什么？”

"Oh, a bird, grandfather, a bird!"

“噢，一只鳥，爺爺，那是一只鳥。”

said little Jane, clapping her hands.

簡(jiǎn)拍著手說(shuō)。

"No, not a bird. It was a fish;

“不，不是一只鳥。我的小姑娘，是一條魚，

a trout, my little girl."

一條鮭魚。”

"Not a fish, grandfather!

“不是魚，爺爺！

A trout come through the branches of a tree in the city?

鮭魚從城里一顆樹的樹枝上掉下來(lái)？

I am sure you must be in fun."

我敢肯定您一定在開玩笑。”

"No, Jane, I tell you the truth.

“不，簡(jiǎn)，我告訴你的是真的。

My friend and I were very much surprised

我的朋友和我

to see a fish falling from a fig tree.

看到一條魚從無(wú)花果樹上掉下來(lái)，感到非常詫異。”

"But we ran from under the tree,

“不過(guò)當(dāng)我們從樹下跑出來(lái)時(shí)，

and saw a fishhawk flying,

看到一只魚隼飛過(guò)，

and an eagle after him.

一只老鷹跟在它后面。”

"The hawk had caught the fish,

“隼抓住了這條魚，

and was carrying it home to his nest,

并把它帶回到自己的巢里，

when the eagle saw it and wanted it.

這時(shí)老鷹看到了那條魚并想得到它。”

"They fought for it.

“他們?yōu)檫@條魚打了起來(lái)。

The fish was dropped,

魚掉下來(lái)了，

and they both lost it.

它們都沒(méi)得到魚。

So much for fighting!"

爭(zhēng)斗才由此停止。”
