The father asked his son why.
The kid replied, "The math whiz who sits next to me was absent on the day of the test."

"flunk"除了表“(考試)不及格”，還可以表示“通不過(考試等)、(某學(xué)科)沒通過、因成績(jī)差而被退學(xué)(flunk out)。

"next"當(dāng)形容詞時(shí)，表“隔壁的，旁邊的”不需再加介詞，如：the next house隔壁家;但在這里，用于說(shuō)明人或物是在隔壁或旁邊時(shí)，則須加介詞to,如：The house is next to mine.這房子在我家隔壁。"mine"是名詞性物主代詞，在這里表示my house。
