I’ve Been Trying That for Years

A man went to the police office wishing to speak with the burglar who had broken into his house the night before.

"You will get your chance in court." said the Desk Sergeant.

"No, no, no." said the man. "I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I've been trying to do that for years."

一個(gè)人來到警察局想和昨天潛入他家偷盜的賊聊聊，警察告訴他說，“你在法庭上會(huì)有這個(gè)機(jī)會(huì)的。”

“不，不，不”，這個(gè)人說，“我就是想知道他是如何做到潛入我家并且還能不驚醒我的老婆，我已經(jīng)努力好多年了都沒能做到這點(diǎn)。”

【詞匯講解】

1. “A man went to the police office wishing to speak with the burglar…”這里的wishing to speak with the burglar表示這個(gè)人去警察局的原因。

2. burglar盜賊。

3.break into闖入。break可以和很多介詞搭配，比如break up“分散”： The crowd broke up after the game.比賽結(jié)束后人群四面散開。break sb into“使某人習(xí)慣”： There was no time to break in a new foreign minister.

沒時(shí)間讓一位新外長(zhǎng)來熟悉情況了。

4.court法庭。out of court不值得考慮： The price would put it out of court for most private buyers.這個(gè)價(jià)格會(huì)使大部分私人買主望而卻步。

5.get into 進(jìn)入。還有“養(yǎng)成”的意思： The boy has got into the habit of washing his hands before meals.那男孩已養(yǎng)成飯前洗手的習(xí)慣。

6.wake弄醒。wake up and smell the coffee 清醒一點(diǎn)。
