He could, without much difficulty, get along in the academy, where there were only two or three boys of his own class to laugh at him.

But now he had to go into a large recitation room, filled with students from all parts of the country.
但是現(xiàn)在他要進到一間非常大的誦讀室里，里面坐著來自全國各地的學(xué)生。
In the presence of all these, he must rise and recite to a professor. Poor fellow! He paid dearly for his idleness.
在所有這些情形下，他必須站起來，面對教授背誦?？蓱z的家伙！他為懶惰付出了高昂的代價。
You would have pitied him if you could have seen him trembling in his seat, every moment expecting to be called upon to recite.
如果你看見他在顫抖中時刻等待被點名背誦時，你一定會可憐他。
And when he was called upon, he would stand up and take what the class called a "dead set;"
當叫到他時，他站起身，采取被同學(xué)們戲稱為“死套路”的辦法，
that is, he could not recite at all.
也就是說，他根本不能背誦。
Sometimes he would make such ludicrous blunders that the whole class would burst into a laugh.
有時他會犯一些非常莫名其妙的錯誤，全班頓時笑成一片。
Such are the applauses an idler gets.
這是對懶惰者喝的倒彩。
He was wretched, of course.
當然，他也很不幸。
He had been idle so long that he hardly knew how to apply his mind to study.
由于懶散了太長時間，他甚至不知道該如何將腦子用在學(xué)習(xí)上。
All the good scholars avoided him; they were ashamed to be seen in his company.
所有的好學(xué)生都躲著他，大家都覺得和他在一起很丟臉。
He became discouraged, and gradually grew dissipated .
他變得心灰意冷，開始慢慢地自暴自棄。
The officers of the college were soon compelled to suspend him.

He returned in a few months, but did no better; and his father was then advised to take him from college.

He left college, despised by everyone.

A few months ago, I met him, a poor wanderer, without money and without friends.

Such are the wages of idleness.
