To act with integrity and good faith was such a habit with Susan that she had never before thought of examining the Golden Rule,

為人正直、辦事誠(chéng)實(shí)守信是蘇珊的習(xí)慣。因此，之前她一直沒(méi)有想到去驗(yàn)證“黃金法則”，

All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.

即無(wú)論什么事，你希望別人怎樣對(duì)待你，你也要怎樣對(duì)待別人。

But the longer she reflected upon it, the stronger was her conviction that she did not always obey the precept;

但她越是長(zhǎng)時(shí)間思考這句話，越是篤定地相信她并沒(méi)有一直遵循這一法則；

at length, she appealed to her mother for its meaning.

最后，她去向媽媽請(qǐng)教這句話的含義。

"It implies," said her mother, in the first place, a total destruction of all selfishness: for a man who loves himself better than his neighbors,

“它意味著，”她媽媽說(shuō)，首先，徹底摧毀一切自私的心理：如果一個(gè)人愛自己比愛鄰居更多，

can never do to others as he would have others do to him.

他就永遠(yuǎn)不可能像他期望別人對(duì)他那樣對(duì)待他人。即無(wú)論什么事，你希望別人怎樣對(duì)待你，你也要怎樣對(duì)待別人。

We are bound not only to do, but to feel, toward others as we would have others feel toward us.

我們一定不只是去幫助別人，還要去體會(huì)別人的感受，因?yàn)閯e人也會(huì)體會(huì)我們的感受。

Remember, it is much easier to reprove the sin of others than to overcome temptation when it assails ourselves.

記住，數(shù)落別人的不是總比克服我們自己面對(duì)的誘惑容易得多。

A man may be perfectly honest and yet very selfish; but the command implies something more than mere honesty; it requires charity as well as integrity.

一個(gè)人可能非常正直，同時(shí)還很自私。但是自我約束意味著比單純的正直更深層次的東西；它需要人們有仁慈之心，為人誠(chéng)實(shí)。

The meaning of the command is fully explained in the parable of the Good Samaritan.

自我約束的含義在《善良的撒馬利亞人》寓言中得到了充分闡釋。

The Levite, who passed by the wounded man without offering him assistance, may have been a man of great honesty;

路過(guò)那個(gè)受傷的人而未對(duì)其施救的利未夫可能也是個(gè)很誠(chéng)實(shí)的人，

but he did not do unto the poor stranger as he would have wished others to do unto him.

但是他沒(méi)有做到對(duì)那個(gè)可憐的陌生人像他期望別人對(duì)待他一樣。
