我們不必非得有戲劇才能，也不必非得具備戲劇性的機(jī)智本領(lǐng)。可是兩者很少能結(jié)合到一起。

so we have successful pieces which are not respectable, and respectable pieces which are not successful.

因此，我們能成功但不一定受到尊敬，受到尊敬的不一定能取得成功。

Take them to the bar, and let them shake their learned curls at each other in legal rivalry;

不妨將兩者置于酒吧環(huán)境下來考察。

talent sees its way clearly, but tact is first at its journey's end.

才能明確地發(fā)現(xiàn)自己的所長，但機(jī)智則會第一個到達(dá)目的地。

Talent has many a compliment from the bench, but tact touches fees.

才能會博得眾人許多恭維，而機(jī)智則會得到免費的禮遇。

Talent makes the world wonder that it gets on no faster, tact arouses astonishment that it gets on so fast.

才能會使這個世界迷茫而裹足不前，機(jī)智則會令世界取得驚人的進(jìn)步。

And the secret is, that it has no weight to carry; it makes no false steps;

個中的秘密在于，在這個環(huán)境下才能的影響力無從傳達(dá)出來，而機(jī)智則不會犯半點錯誤;

it hits the right nail on the head; it loses no time;

它切中要害，不會浪費任何時間;

it takes all hints; and, by keeping its eye on the weathercock, is ready to take advantage of every wind that blows.

再者，那些密切關(guān)注風(fēng)向標(biāo)的人，隨時會利用吹來的每股風(fēng)，自己無往而不利。

Take them into the church: talent has always something worth hearing, tact is sure of abundance of hearers;

還有，我們再將兩者置于教堂里進(jìn)行比較。才能始終有值得傾聽的東西，而機(jī)智肯定擁有大量聽眾;

talent may obtain a living, tact will make one;

才能也許可以用來謀生，但機(jī)智可以創(chuàng)造一個新生活。

talent gets a good name, tact a great one;

才能會使人博得好名聲，而機(jī)智可以使其成為偉人。

talent convinces, tact converts; talent is an honor to the profession, tact gains honor from the profession.

才能有說服力，而機(jī)智則可以改變一個人;才能對于職業(yè)而言是一種榮譽(yù)，而機(jī)智卻可以從職業(yè)獲得榮譽(yù)。
