第五十二課 他的善良天使們

One bleak winter night two little girls went out into the streets to go in search of their father. The wind swept fiercely along, and almost drove them back.

在一個(gè)寒冬的晚上，兩個(gè)小女孩出門到街上去尋找她們的父親。風(fēng)猛烈地吹著，幾乎要把她們吹回去。

But they tightly clasped each other's hands, and, bending their little forms to meet the pressure of the cold, rushing air, hurried on as fast as they could.

但是她們緊緊地扣住彼此的手，彎著她們單薄的身軀迎著急促的寒流，用她們所能的最快的速度向前。

The streets were dark and deserted, but the children were not afraid: love filled their hearts, and left no room for fear.

黑暗的街道空無一人，但是兩個(gè)孩子并不害怕，因?yàn)樗齻兊男闹谐錆M了愛以至于不再感到恐懼。

At last they stopped before a house, over the door of which was a handsome gas-lamp, and a sign in large gilded letters.

最后，她們?cè)谝蛔孔忧巴Ａ讼聛恚T的那邊是一盞漂亮的煤氣燈和簽著字的大型的鍍金信封。

It was a strange place for little girls to enter, and at such an hour; but, after standing for a moment, they pushed open the green door, and stepped into a large and brilliantly lighted room.

對(duì)小女孩而言這是一個(gè)奇怪的地方，但在站了一會(huì)兒后她們推開了綠色的門，進(jìn)入了一個(gè)寬敞明亮的房間。

"Well, now!" exclaimed a man who sat reading at a table. "Here are those babes again!—Come here, my little girls."

“現(xiàn)在！”一個(gè)坐在桌旁閱讀的人呼喚道。“又來了一些天真的姑娘！來，到這兒來，小姑娘們。”

The children stopped and looked at him. Then he signed to them to approach; and they did so.

小孩兒們停下了看著他。接著，她們按他的指示走了過去。

"Are you looking for your father?" he asked.

“你們是在尋找你們的父親嗎？”他問。

"Yes, sir," replied Ada.

“是的，先生。”Ada回答道。

"Does your mother know you have come?"

“你們的母親知道你們出來嗎？”

"Yes, sir. She told us to go to bed: but we could not go until father returned; and so we came for him first."

“是的，先生。她讓我們?nèi)ニX但是父親沒回來我們不能去睡，所以我們首先出來找他。”

"He is here."

“他在這。”

"Is he?" And the children's faces brightened.

“是嗎？”孩子們的臉上頓時(shí)閃出了光芒。

"Yes. He is at the other side of the room, asleep. I will wake him for you."

“是的。他正在這個(gè)房子的另一邊睡覺呢。我會(huì)幫你們把他叫起來的。”

Being sound asleep, it was with difficulty that their father could be aroused.

她們的父親睡得正香，因此叫醒他還真是有難度的。

As soon, however, as his eyes were fairly opened, and he found that Ada and Jane had each grasped tightly one of his hands, he rose up, and suffered them to lead him away."Oh dear!" exclaimed a man who had looked on with wonder and deep interest; "God bless the little ones, and give them a sober father!"

不一會(huì)兒，他的雙眼完全睜開了，他發(fā)現(xiàn)Ada和Jane緊緊抓住他的兩只手，他臉紅了起來，痛苦地讓孩子們帶他回家。

"They are his good angels," remarked another. "But I'm afraid they are not strong enough to lead him back to the paths he has forsaken. But God may yet turn his heart, and give these children a happy home."

“她們是他善良的天使啊”，另一個(gè)人說。“但是我擔(dān)心她們不夠強(qiáng)大能把父親引領(lǐng)回他曾經(jīng)拋棄的人生道路。但上帝也許會(huì)轉(zhuǎn)變他的心，并給孩子們一個(gè)幸福的家。”

The next evening, to the joy of his family, their father came home quite sober. After tea, while Ada and Jane were standing one on either side of him, he said, in a low whisper, "You shall never again have to go out at night to bring me home."

下一個(gè)晚上，為了使家庭愉快，她們的父親清醒地回到了家。喝過茶，當(dāng)兩個(gè)孩子分別站在父親兩側(cè)時(shí)，他小聲地說“你們?cè)僖膊灰谝雇沓鲩T找我回家了。”

The children lifted their eyes quickly to his face, only half understanding what he meant.

"God helping me, I will never go to that place again," he added. "I will always stay at home with you."

Ada and Jane, now understanding what their father meant, hid their faces in his lap and wept for very gladness.

The children's love had saved their father. They were indeed his good angels. But he did not trust to his own strength alone: he continued to ask God to help him in his endeavours to live a sober life; and ere long it was seen that he was a changed man.

孩子們的愛喚醒了父親。她們是父親的善良天使。然而，他并不確信單憑自己一個(gè)人的力量，于是，他繼續(xù)去請(qǐng)求上帝的幫助，希望通過自己的努力告別宿醉，過一個(gè)清醒的生活。不久之后，可以看見，他真的實(shí)現(xiàn)了改變。
