As he spoke the gleam of the side-lights of a carriage came round the curve of the avenue.
他說話時，馬車兩側車燈發(fā)出的閃爍燈光順著彎曲的街道繞過來。
It was a smart little landau which rattled up to the door of Briony Lodge.
那是一輛漂亮的四輪小馬車咯噠咯噠地駛到布里翁尼府第門前。
As it pulled up, one of the loafing men at the corner dashed forward to open the door in the hope of earning a copper,
馬車剛一停下，一個流浪漢從角落里沖上前去開車門，希望賺個銅子，
but was elbowed away by another loafer, who had rushed up with the same intention.
但是卻被抱著同樣想法竄在前頭的另一個流浪漢擠開。
A fierce quarrel broke out, which was increased by the two guardsmen, who took sides with one of the loungers,
于是爆發(fā)了一場激烈的爭吵，兩個警衛(wèi)站在一個流浪漢一邊，
and by the scissors-grinder, who was equally hot upon the other side.
而磨剪刀的則同樣起勁地站在另一個流浪漢一邊。
A blow was struck, and in an instant the lady, who had stepped from her carriage,
這樣爭吵得就更厲害了。接著不知是誰先動手開打，
was the centre of a little knot of flushed and struggling men,
這時這位夫人剛好下車，立刻就被卷進糾纏在一起的人群中間。
who struck savagely at each other with their fists and sticks.
這些人滿面通紅，扭在一起拳打棒擊，野蠻地互相毆斗。
Holmes dashed into the crowd to protect the lady;
福爾摩斯猛地沖入人群去保衛(wèi)夫人。
but just as he reached her he gave a cry and dropped to the ground, with the blood running freely down his face.
但是，剛到她的身邊，就大喊一聲，倒臥于地，臉上鮮血直流。
At his fall the guardsmen took to their heels in one direction and the loungers in the other,
眾人見他倒地，兩個警衛(wèi)朝一個方向拔腳溜走，那些流浪漢朝另一個方向逃之夭夭。
while a number of better-dressed people, who had watched the scuffle without taking part in it,
此時，有些衣著比較整齊、只看熱鬧而沒有參加毆斗的人擠了進來，
crowded in to help the lady and to attend to the injured man.
為夫人解圍和照顧這位受傷的先生。
