LESSON 32 Houses made of snow

第三十二課 雪屋

All the winter, the Esquimaux live in huts made of snow. These huts are very clean and white when they are new, but they soon turn dirty; and when the summer comes they begin to melt.

愛(ài)斯基摩人整個(gè)冬天都住在冰雪筑城的屋子里。這些屋子新建時(shí)很干凈潔白，但很快會(huì)變臟；夏天一來(lái)，這些房子就融化。

Sometimes the Esquimaux find logs of wood on the shore, which have been drifted by the waves from some other country; and these they gather, and build their huts with them.

有時(shí)會(huì)愛(ài)斯基摩人會(huì)在岸邊找到從其它國(guó)家漂來(lái)的木頭；他們會(huì)把這些木頭收集起來(lái)蓋房子。

When they cannot get wood, they use the pure white snow. It is frozen so hard that it keeps firm all through the winter. Sometimes, when the hut becomes very warm with the lamps, and the people, and the dogs, the walls begin to drip a little; but a piece of fresh snow rubbed over the place soon mends it.

找不到木頭時(shí)，他們就用白雪。因?yàn)榻Y(jié)成了很硬的冰，所以整個(gè)冬天都不會(huì)倒塌。有時(shí)候，燈帶來(lái)的溫度會(huì)使房子部分融化，但是只要下一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)雪就能補(bǔ)上。

The windows of these huts are not made of glass, but of ice.

這些房子的窗戶由冰雪而不是玻璃做成。

Though there is no fire in the hut, it is as warm as the Esquimau can bear it. He warms it with his lamp; which is nothing but a vessel like a saucer, full of oil. A great many little wicks float on the oil, and he lights them all. The burning wicks make the room warm. A cooking-pot hangs over the lamp; but he often eats his meat raw.

雖然室內(nèi)沒(méi)有火，但是愛(ài)斯基摩人能在這樣的溫度下生活。他們用燈來(lái)增加溫度；這些燈并不是什么別的東西，只是裝滿了油的淺碟。油里漂浮著很多燈芯，他們會(huì)全部點(diǎn)燃。燃燒的燈芯給室內(nèi)帶來(lái)溫度。做飯用的鍋懸掛在燈上；但是他們經(jīng)常吃生肉。

He has no chairs or tables, for he does not know how to make them; but there is a raised ledge all round the hut, covered with warm skins. This is his seat during the day, and his bed at night. But under the skins there is nothing but snow.

屋子里沒(méi)有椅子也沒(méi)有桌子，因?yàn)樗麄儾恢涝趺醋觯坏欠孔又車加幸恍└吲_(tái)，上面鋪著暖和的獸皮。白天這就是椅子，晚上這就是床。獸皮下除了雪什么都沒(méi)有。

When the warm weather comes, the Esquimau is glad to get away from the snow hut. Its walls begin to melt, and he gets wet as he lies in bed, and often catches cold. He is therefore very glad to escape from it to his tent,which forms his summer residence.

天氣回暖時(shí)，愛(ài)斯基摩人會(huì) 興高采烈地從雪屋里搬出來(lái)。房屋墻壁開始融化，如果這時(shí)候還在里面睡覺(jué)就會(huì)全身濕透，然后感冒。因此，他們很樂(lè)意從里面搬到帳篷——他們夏天的住所。
