第三課 捕獸者小羅伯特

One morning while the pitmen were at work in a coal mine, they heard a noise louder than thunder.

一天早上，當(dāng)?shù)V工在煤礦里工作時(shí)，他們聽(tīng)到一聲比雷聲還大的響動(dòng)。

In a moment every lamp was out, and men and boys threw down their tools and ran.

瞬間，所有的燈都熄滅了，大人和孩子都扔下工具跑了。

It is Tuesday morning. The men reach the bottom of the shaft, and count their number.

星期二的早上，人們到達(dá)了礦井的底部數(shù)著人數(shù)。

Five are missing, four men and one little trapper, Robert Lester.

失蹤了五個(gè)人，四個(gè)礦井工人和捕獸者小羅伯特。

People above hear the noise, and rush to the pit's mouth.

礦井上面的人們聽(tīng)到響動(dòng)，都沖到礦井口。

The workmen are taken up. O the agony of the wives and mothers of those who are left behind!

礦工們被帶了上來(lái)。那些消失礦工們的妻子和母親都沉浸在無(wú)盡的痛苦中。

Brave men go back to their rescue. They light their lamps and reach the crush.

英勇的礦工們又返回去開(kāi)始營(yíng)救。他們點(diǎn)亮燈，來(lái)到廢墟區(qū)。

There is nothing but a heap of ruins.

那里除了一堆廢墟，別無(wú)它物。

They shout, but there is no answer.

Up go pickaxes and shovels, to clear the way.

It is great labour, and it involves great risk.

Men flock from all quarters to offer their services.

Towards night they hear something.

It is not a voice, but a tapping. It can just be heard.

那不是一種聲音，而是敲打聲，剛能被聽(tīng)到。

Clink, clink, clink, clink, clink! five times, and then it stopped.

叮當(dāng)、叮當(dāng)、叮當(dāng)、叮當(dāng)、叮當(dāng)！五次，然后停止了。

Clink, clink, five times again, and then it stopped.

Five more, and then a stop.

What does it mean? One man guessed.

There were five missing, and the five clinks showed that all the five were alive, waiting for deliverance.

A shout of joy went up in and above the pit.

礦井里和礦井上面都響起了人們高興歡呼的聲音。
