第二十五課 他不曾再笑

The bark that held a prince went down,

樹(shù)枝阻擋住王子的掉落，

The sweeping waves rolled on;

翻騰的海面滾滾向前；

And what was England's glorious crown

什么是英格蘭光榮的皇冠

To him that wept a son?

讓他痛失一個(gè)兒子？

He lived—for life may long be borne

他還活著——余生可能要長(zhǎng)期承受

Ere sorrow break its chain;

悲傷打破了他的枷鎖；

Why comes not death to those who mourn? —

為什么死亡不降臨到這些悲痛的人身上？——

He never smiled again!

他不曾再笑！

There stood proud forms around his throne,

以驕傲的姿態(tài)站在他的王座上

The stately and the brave;

莊嚴(yán)而勇敢；

But which could fill the place of one, —

但是我怎樣才能填滿這個(gè)地方，——

That one beneath the wave?

波浪以下的那個(gè)地方？

Before him passed the young and fair,

年輕又正直之人從他面前經(jīng)過(guò)，

In pleasure's reckless train;

But seas dashed o'er his son's bright hair: —

He sat where festal bowls went round,

他坐在歡快的碗中轉(zhuǎn)動(dòng)，

He heard the minstrel sing;

他聽(tīng)到吟游詩(shī)人在歌唱；

He saw the tourney's victor crowned

他看到比賽獲勝者的加冕

Amidst the knightly ring:

環(huán)繞在騎士的光環(huán)之中：

A murmur of the restless deep

焦躁不安的低語(yǔ)

Was blent with every strain,

與每個(gè)人混合在一起，

A voice of winds that would not sleep: —

風(fēng)的聲音不會(huì)休眠：——

He never smiled again!

他不曾再笑！

Hearts, in that time, closed o'er the trace

Of vows once fondly poured;

曾經(jīng)天真的誓言；

And strangers took the kinsman's place

陌生人被帶到親屬所在之地

At many a joyous board;

Graves, which true love had bathed with tears,

Were left to heaven's bright rain;

Fresh hopes were born for other years: —
