Wanting Zhong

00:10

Often when I'm out in public, a child willstare at me. And if the child is particularly brave, they'll approach me andask: "Are you a pirate?"

00:12

(Laughter)

00:16

To which I then need to respond, onceagain, "Yes."

00:20

(Laughter)

00:23

I mean, let's be honest: I've got twohooks, prosthetic legs and a penchant for hard liquor.

00:28

(Laughter)

00:29

All I need is an eye-patch and a parrot,and I'm basically there.

00:32

(Laughter)

00:35

But I like being a pirate. I find manyadvantages to having a disability, and I'm not just talking about the money Isave on gloves ...

00:44

(Laughter)

00:47

or the fantastically legitimate excuse fornever having to master chopsticks.

00:51

(Laughter)

00:52

I'm talking about real advantages I feelI've gained, having gone through physical adversity.

00:58

When I was 19, I contracted a disease thatresulted in the loss of both my arms at the elbows, both my legs below theknee, and left enough scars on my face to elicit jealousy in Freddy Krueger.

01:09

(Laughter)

01:11

Now, I may never be able to communicate insign language, but my increased resilience and general ability to problem-solvehas been heightened by being forced to think laterally to overcome problemsthat most people aren't faced with.

01:27

One of the first lessons that I learnedimmediately followed the painful and arduous task of learning how to walkagain, but it went on to pay dividends for the rest of my life. It happenedwhen I attempted to step up a curb. Now as rudimentary as this action sounds tomost of you, stepping up a curb is somewhat of a challenge for those of uswithout ankle movement. So I tried stepping up the curb the way I'd alwaysknown how, front on, for days on end, with no success, until it became obviousthat the time and effort I was investing into this endeavor was clearlydisproportionate to the benefit of its outcome.

02:05

(Laughter)

02:10

So, I decided to inspect the problem from adifferent angle. If I couldn't use an ankle joint to achieve the range of motionthat I required to mount the curb, I would have to use a different joint, likemy hip. So I turned my body perpendicular to the curb and placed my foot upsideways, and I was able to step up immediately. Within five minutes, nostaircase was safe from my advances.

02:35

(Laughter)

02:36

That very day, I climbed a staircase ofthree flights, which I was quite impressed with as well, except I realized thatI didn't know how to get back down again.

02:45

(Laughter)

02:47

That was a long weekend.

02:48

(Laughter)

02:53

Now, in my past life as an able-bodiedperson, I'd been a guitarist. I was alright as a player, but I'd never reallytaken it further. I'd never really started a band or played live all that much.Nonetheless, music was a great passion of mine, and when I lost my arms, theidea that it may no longer be a part of my life critically challenged my willto keep living. However, the thought that emerged immediately after beingdischarged from hospital was: "If Ray Charles can play the piano whileblind as a bat, let's get to work on a solution for this guitar problem."So, consulting with an engineer, I designed a slide system that would hook intomy left hook, and I devised another pick-holder system that would clip into myright hook. Now, if this worked, I would be able to play the guitar open tunedon my lap, like a slide.

03:47

So after weeks of testing and alterations,I finally had the accessories back to play the guitar again, and I was rightback where I was before losing my hands -- being issued with noise complaintsfrom my neighbors, obviously.

03:59

(Laughter)

04:01

But this time, I took it further. I starteda band with my friends. We wrote songs and recorded them. We even played gigsto real people. Not as many as this.

04:14

(Laughter)

04:17

But even though it was a just a tiny step,it was a giant leap from what I'd achieved when I was all in one piece.

04:26

Now while relearning every action that onehas ever cultivated might seem like a significant undertaking -- and believeme, it very much was, in the short term -- it was nonetheless having a positiveeffect on the way that I approached everything else in my life. Not only did ittransform my ability to problem-solve, but I also felt I became more pragmatic, less sensitive to hindrances, in some cases, more patient, and magicallytransformed people's abilities to offer me their seats on public transport.

04:58

(Laughter)

05:02

Trivial setbacks began to pale incomparison to challenges I'd previously overcome, and this allowed me to take acalm and measured approach to these challenges, keeping them in perspective andoften even finding new and improved ways to overcome them. The benefit of notdwelling on the negative and just getting on with the task at hand becameself-evident. It even encouraged me to pursue some more fulfilling career pathsthat may otherwise have been inadvisable. And who would have thought that anappropriate job for me might involve the meticulous operation of electronicequipment to curate dance music to people in inaccessible places under theinfluence of alcohol.

05:45

(Laughter)

05:47

Not I.

05:50

So in a competitive industry where DJs havebeen relentlessly honing their craft, desperate to attain gigs, sending demosto clubs, my best friend and I took a different approach, and we started ourown club night, and we employed ourselves as the DJs.

06:04

(Laughter)

06:06

Suddenly, we had a headline slot.

06:08

(Laughter)

06:11

Now, when we started that club night, Icould not DJ. The first time I ever got behind the decks was on our openingnight, in front of hundreds of people. I'd only just learned where the playbutton was.

06:23

(Laughter)

06:25

But, being previously faced with so manyultimatums, one's forced to be astute in adapting to new situations.

06:32

That club night went on to become thelongest-running weekly club night in Sydney, and we as DJs went on to playAustralia's biggest music festivals. So eventually, I either learned quickly,or the standards of clubs have gone really downhill.

06:46

Coming close to death can be an educationalexperience. It's certainly true that one's priorities receive somewhat of arealignment immediately afterwards. And it's also true that some of thosepriorities are met with an increased sense of urgency. But another, moresalient realization that comes to light is the triviality of our ownself-importance and self-consciousness. To truly understand the extent to whichyour self-consciousness prohibits you from engaging in opportunities shouldlead everyone to take risks they otherwise wouldn't. We're merely a blip on thetime line of the universe, right? Act accordingly.

07:36

Now the ideas that I'm presenting todaywere imbued upon me through some otherwise unfortunate circumstances, granted, but they're lying dormant in the lives of anyone who's willing to exploit them.If we all understand that we all have unique weaknesses, and if we're honestabout what they are, we can learn how to best take advantage of them, whetherthey be mounting a curb or fear of presenting sales reports or the inability tosufficiently manage one's finances -- looking at that guy --

08:11

(Laughter)

08:14

there lies the ability to learn, to adapt, and even the ability to rewire one's instinctual response to challenges.

08:25

Adversity is good, and it has the potentialto make you stronger. And, at the very least, you can scare the hell out ofkids if you look like a pirate.

08:36

Thanks.
