1　a number of 相當于many，意為“許多”，也可以說a large number of或a small number of （不多），后跟復數(shù)名詞或代詞，謂語動詞用復數(shù)。a number of 還可表示“若干”。

A number of children are playing on the grass. 許多兒童在草地上玩。

I have a large number of books to read. 我有許多書要讀。

Only a small number of students like the film. 僅有一小部分學生喜歡這部電影。

2　the number of 表示“……的數(shù)目”，of 后跟復數(shù)名詞。在這個結(jié)構(gòu)中，the number 是主語，謂語動詞要用單數(shù)。

The number of students in this class is 40. （正）這個班的學生數(shù)是40 。

The number of students in this class are 40.（誤）
