11. The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd

If all the world and love were young,
And truth in every shepherd's tongue,
These pretty pleasures might me move
To live with thee and be thy love.
Time drives the flocks from field to fold,
When rivers rage and rocks grow cold,
And Philomel becometh dumb;
The rest complains of cares to come.
The flowers do fade, and wanton fields
To wayward winter reckoning yields;
A honey tongue, a heart of gall,
Is fancy's spring, but sorrow's fall.
Thy gowns, thy shoes, thy beds of roses,
Thy cap, thy kirtle, and thy posies
Soon break, soon wither, soon forgotten:
In folly ripe, in reason rotten.
Thy belt of straw and ivy buds,
Thy coral clasps and amber studs,
All these in me no means can move
To come to thee and be thy love.
But could youth last and love still breed,
Had joys no date nor age no need,
Then these delights my mind might move
To live with thee and be thy love.

如果牧羊人說話至誠殷切，

你珊瑚的襻扣，琥珀的飾紐，
這一切都很難使我動情，
誘使我來到你身邊，做你的愛人。
但如果愛情不衰亡，青春能持久，
如果歡樂既無盡期又無圖謀，
那這些賞心樂事也許能使我動情，
誘使我與你一道生活，做你的愛人。

[1]此詩為應和馬洛的《癡情的牧羊人致愛人》（見后文第17首）而作，意在諷刺牧歌式的田園生活的非現(xiàn)實性。
[2]瓦爾特·勞利（Walter Raleigh，1554—1618），政治活動家、軍事統(tǒng)帥、航海家、音樂家和歷史學家，同時又是詩人。出生于名門望族，在牛津大學就讀不到一年便棄學從軍。一生從事航海和殖民活動。1603年，因叛國罪被囚禁于倫敦塔。1616年獲釋，赴圭亞那尋找金礦。1618年10月被處死。著有《世界史》（1614）。
