Commuters faced a nightmare journey home tonight as Britain's trains were blighted by delays and road surfaces melted in the heat.

As the country recorded its hottest July day on record, temperatures on the London Underground sky-rocketed to an astonishing 100F (37C).

And Network Rail imposed speed restrictions on some lines amid fears the metal tracks could buckle under the searing heat.

Meanwhile motoring group The AA said it had been called out to reports of road surfaces melting in the heat, bringing disruption to drivers.

Temperatures on the Tube were recorded as 37C at Oxford Circus and Leicester Square, and 35C (95F) at Chancery Lane, Bank and King’s Cross.
