Fighting Against the Coronavirus
Xinmin Weekly
Issue No. 4, 2020
During the recent Spring Festival, China was reeling from the impact of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. Progress in the prevention and control of the epidemic has not only touched the hearts of millions of Chinese, but also attracted the attention of the whole world. On January 30, WHO listed the epidemic outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern.
Infectious diseases, since ancient times, have been the public event with the greatest impact on social development. Of course, with the development of modern medicine today, times are different than they were a hundred years ago. We now have more medicine, good medical equipment, and modern hospitals.
At the same time, modern society also has its own weaknesses. As a result of developed modes of traffic, infectious diseases can spread more rapidly. The ability of infectious diseases to spread has also changed from time to time, challenging our modern society to find new approaches of prevention and control. China has mobilized medical forces across the country to support the key areas affected by the epidemic; the government has coordinated the supply of medical materials; suspected cases are being isolated; and the resumption of work and school has been rescheduled. Overall, the participation of the whole society and scientific attitude taken in the fight against this coronavirus epidemic are the biggest characteristics of this time.

Over the past few years, China has fully proved its ability to develop from one to infinity, but the ability to create still remains a challenge.
Changes are happening. Scientific and technological innovation has become a strong driving force for Chinas economic transformation and upgrading and high-quality development. It has spurred regional economic and industrial development, and guided investment. The future trend of scientific and technological innovation will enable us to dispel the present perplexities and see where the most real opportunities are.

The Value of the Chinese Womens Volleyball Team
Sanlian Life Weekly
Issue No. 4, 2020
In 2019, the Chinese womens volleyball team won the womens volleyball World Cup with 11 consecutive wins, nearly 40 years after it won its first world championship in 1981. This years games was also the teams 10th world championship. Chinese peoples enthusiasm for the team has never vanished over time, nor did the marginal benefit diminish as the number of champions has continued to grow.
The womens volleyball team in China rose to prominence in the 1980s. The excellence and perseverance demonstrated by the team in scoring five consecutive championships greatly inspired the Chinese people. Since then, the spirit of the womens volleyball team has become a spiritual symbol in China.
In fact, winning or losing a volleyball match is complicated. Even though each team players height, physical strength, technical movement, error rate, etc. can be measured by data, the result of each game is still unpredictable as it is determined by many other variables. The Chinese womens volleyball team has had the joy of beating stronger opponents, and also regretfully faced defeat at games despite the fact they exerted their best efforts. This is exactly the beauty of competitive sports.
The spirit of the womens volleyball team reminds us that gold medals are not achieved by merely chanting slogans and training hard. They are the result of hard work and practice by generations of coaches and players who follow the rules of the game.
New-Energy Vehicles, a New Cycle
Capital Week
Issue No. 3, 2020
The year 2020 will be a milestone in the development of new-energy vehicles in China.
Since China officially launched the 863 Program for promoting research and development of high technology in 2001, sales of newenergy vehicles in China have soared from 8,159 to 1,256,000 in 2018, with a compound annual growth rate of 87.5 percent. Then in 2019 the growth rate came to an abrupt halt, making it the first year during which new-energy vehicle sales declined after several previous years of sharp growth.
However, judging from the trend of new-energy vehicle sales from July to December 2019, the negative impact of subsidy withdrawal is subsiding – sales reached 105,000 in November and 163,000 in December, returning to the average level before the withdrawal.
In addition to this, a new plan released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) states that by the year 2025, new sales of new energy vehicles will account for 25 percent of the total. After five years, the Ministry of Finance once again included newenergy vehicles in its annual work conference agenda.
At present, China has the worlds largest market for new-energy vehicles, the most complete industrial supporting system, and the most complete policy supporting system. A number of internationally competitive enterprises have also joined the competition. In the long run, Chinas new-energy vehicle industry will have an advantageous scale effect and a good development environment.
