Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate：

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May，

And summer's lease hath all too short a date：

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines

And often is his gold compIexion dimmed；

And every fair from fair sometimes declines，

By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed：

But thy eternaI summer shall not fade，

Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st.

Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade，

When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st，

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see，

So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

威廉·莎士比亞（William Shakespeare），英國文藝復(fù)興時期偉大的劇作家、詩人，歐洲文藝復(fù)興時期人文主義文學(xué)的集大成者。他寫過154首十四行詩，三或四首長詩。他是“英國戲劇之父”，本·瓊斯稱他為“時代的靈魂”，馬克思稱他為“人類最偉大的天才之一”，公認(rèn)為“人類文學(xué)奧林匹斯山上的宙斯”。

這是莎士比亞154首十四行詩中的第18首。詩人將自己的心上人比作夏日的一天，又指出夏天其實沒有那么完美，夏天不光短暫，還有狂風(fēng)、驕陽和陰暗；詩人接著說任何美麗都會時過境遷，而只要這些詩篇流傳，她就永遠(yuǎn)活在人們心間。
