Malaysian police arrested Doan Thi Huong, who is Vietnamese, and Siti Aishah, an Indonesian national, following an attack at Kuala Lumpur airport two weeks ago in which Kim’s face was smeared with poison.

Police say the deadly nerve agent VX, a chemical weapon, was found on Kim’s face and eyes. Airport security camera footage showed two women assaulting Kim, with the North Korean later seen seeking help from airport staff.

Police and government officials in the women’s home countries say they believed they were taking part in a prank for a reality TV show.

However, Malaysian police say the women knew the substance was toxic and washed their hands afterwards. The Indonesian woman later fell sick, vomiting repeatedly in custody, police added.

The killing has damaged relations between Malaysia and North Korea, which have previously enjoyed cordial ties including visa-free travel.

A delegation from North Korea including Ri Tong-il, a former deputy ambassador to the UN, arrived in Kuala Lumpur for talks with officials this week.

In a statement to media outside the North Korean embassy yesterday, Mr Ri said the delegation would be pressing for the return of Kim’s body and would be seeking the release of a North Korean national detained by Malaysian police.

Mr Ri said he was in Malaysia for “the development of friendly relations between the DPRK [North Korea] and the Malaysian government”, according to local media.

As well as a man who has been detained, Malaysian police have identified at least six other North Korean nationals who are wanted in connection with Kim’s death.

North Korea has attempted to block the postmortem examination, asked for its officials to be present during the examination, and demanded the release of the body.

These actions suggest Pyongyang sought to conceal the use of a chemical weapon, analysts say. The use and possession of chemical weapons is banned under the Chemical Weapons Convention, which North Korea has not signed.

Separately, Malaysian authorities confirmed yesterday two North Korea-linked businesses that had been registered in Malaysia were being struck off. One company said its business was multimedia and electronics, while the other was in information technology and telecoms technology products, police say.

Malaysian police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said police were constantly monitoring to protect Malaysia’s national security. “We have also taken all necessary actions to comply with international regulations with regards to related sanctions,” he added.
