The growing row, which has pulled in almost all major UK political figures just 36 hours after seven people were killed by three assailants near London Bridge, has piled pressure on Mrs May, who was already on the defensive for her faltering campaign.
Mrs May attempted to use her leadership during the terrorist attacks — including last month’s bombing in Manchester, which left 22 dead — to reinforce her “strong and stable” campaign message on Monday morning by arguing: “There is not time for learning on the job.”
But Sadiq Khan, London’s Labour mayor, claimed Mrs May was planning total cuts of £1.7bn to the Metropolitan Police budget over a decade, saying: “We are not receiving the sort of funding we need as a capital city.”
While Mrs May’s six-year stint as home secretary, from 2010 to 2016, has until now been seen as an electoral asset, her record in presiding over a 20,000 cut in the number of national police is being questioned in the wake of three terror attacks in three months.
Although Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader challenging Mrs May for the premiership, began criticising the prime minister on Sunday night, Mr Khan has in the past attempted to distance himself from Mr Corbyn and his criticism is likely to carry more weight, particularly given his role managing London.
Mr Corbyn on Monday further raised the stakes, saying Mrs May should resign. “She is now saying that we have a problem,” he said. “Yes, we do have a problem, we should never have cut the police numbers.”
Steve Hilton, a one-time policy chief to former prime minister David Cameron, also called for Mrs May to quit, tweeting: “Theresa May responsible for security failures of London Bridge, Manchester, Westminster Bridge. Should be resigning not seeking re-election.”
