Robert Mugabe, the man who has presided over Zimbabwe for nearly 40 years, defied calls to step down as head of state on Sunday night after earlier being sacked as leader of the ruling Zanu-PF party.

統(tǒng)治津巴布韋近40年的羅伯特•穆加貝(Robert Mugabe)周日晚間宣布拒絕辭任國家元首，此前執(zhí)政的非洲民族聯(lián)盟-愛國陣線(Zanu-PF)解除了其黨首之職。

Mr Mugabe, the world’s oldest leader, had been told to resign as president by midday on Monday or face impeachment by parliament. But on Sunday evening he shocked viewers around the world when he said he would preside over Zanu-PF’s congress next month and gave no sign that he would relinquish his role as president.

世界最年長的國家領(lǐng)導人穆加貝，被要求在周一中午前辭去總統(tǒng)之職，否則將面臨議會彈劾。但周日晚間，他表示自己將主持下月召開的非洲民族聯(lián)盟-愛國陣線代表大會，沒有表現(xiàn)出將要辭職的任何跡象，此舉令全世界的電視觀眾震驚。

Flanked by the generals who have taken over the country — and stumbling through a sometimes rambling speech — he admitted that his ruling party had become involved in factional infighting that had neglected the economy and damaged its people.

But he said events this week were “not a threat” to his authority and told the nation: “We cannot be guided by bitterness.”

The drama unfolded just hours after the ruling party Zanu-PF ditched Mr Mugabe as its head and replaced him with Emmerson Mnangagwa, whose dismissal as Zimbabwe’s vice-president triggered last week’s military takeover.

Zanu-PF also expelled Grace Mugabe, Mr Mugabe’s 52-year-old wife, whose plotting to succeed her husband and purge the party of war veterans had pushed the army to intervene. The party will now press for her prosecution on charges of corruption.
