Farmers had been throwing away unsalable vegetables, the prices of which plunged after vegetables in North China ripened early, impacting the market already saturated with vegetables from southern China.

因北方蔬菜成熟較早，直接影響到已有南方蔬菜飽和供應(yīng)的市場，致使蔬菜價格猛跌，菜農(nóng)已開始扔棄滯銷蔬菜。

文中的unsalable vegetables就是指“滯銷蔬菜”，unsalable就是“滯銷的”，比如unsalable products（積壓產(chǎn)品）、unsalable stock（無銷路股票）。Unmarketable、poorselling等詞也可以用來表示“滯銷”。為了把滯銷商品盡快銷售出去，商家常會開展sales promotion（促銷）。

如今，為了解決目前的oversupply of vegetables（蔬菜供應(yīng)量加大），不少地區(qū)已組織超市等單位掀起buying spree（收購潮），盡力避免菜農(nóng)遭受heavy loss（巨大損失）。為解決這一難題，還要著眼流通環(huán)節(jié)。據(jù)稱，each link in distribution（每個流通環(huán)節(jié)）都會加價10%至15%收購蔬菜。
