(87) THE ROBBER'S JOY
昔有群賊,共行劫盜,多取財(cái)物,即共分之。等以為分,唯有鹿野欽婆羅,色不純好,以為下分,與最劣者。下劣者得之恚恨,謂呼大失。
Once upon a time, there was a band of robbers who divided their boot according to their different ranks. Among the belongings, there was a Benares Kambala, the color of which left much to be desired. It was considered as an inferior part to be given to one of the robbers of the lowest rank. The robber got angry and made a strong protest to the rest.
至城賣之,諸貴長(zhǎng)者多與其價(jià),一人所得倍于眾伴,方乃歡喜,踴悅無量。
Afterwards, he brought it to the city for sale. An honorable elderly man paid him a high price. He ended up getting more money than any other robber in the band. He then leaped for joy.
猶如世人,不知布施有報(bào)無報(bào),而行少施,得生天上,受無量樂。方更悔恨,悔不廣施。如欽婆羅,后得大價(jià),乃生歡喜,施亦如是。少作多得,爾乃自慶,恨不益焉。
This is held to be true with the almsgiving. People who are doing almsgiving, are usually not aware whether there will be a retribution. Be it ever so little they are doing it, they, after death, go to Heaven to enjoy an unlimited amount of happiness. The less they do, the more they get. They will then regret for not having done enough. This is just like the robber who was happy after he had got a top price for his Kambala.

源流:
《眾經(jīng)撰雜譬喻經(jīng)》卷下第二十八則:昔有導(dǎo)師入海采寶。時(shí)有五百人追之共行。導(dǎo)師謂曰:「海中有五難:一者激流,二者洄波,三者大魚,四者女鬼,五者醉菓。能度此難,乃可共行?!贡娙艘?,乘風(fēng)入海,到寶渚,各行采寶。一人不勝菓香,食之,一醉七日。眾人寶足,颿風(fēng)已到,欲嚴(yán)還出,鳴鼓集人,一人不滿,四布求之,見臥樹下,醉未曾醒。共扶來還,折樹枝柱之,共歸還國(guó)。
家門聞喜,悉來迎逆。醉者見無所得,獨(dú)甚愁戚。醉人不樂,柱杖入市,市人求價(jià),乃至二萬兩金,其人與之。問:「杖有何德?」曰:「此為樹寶,搗燒此杖,熏諸瓦石,悉成珍寶?!?《大正藏》第四冊(cè)第五三八頁(yè))
《諸經(jīng)中要事》:昔有貧寒孤獨(dú)老公,家無自業(yè),遇市一斧,是眾寶之英,而不識(shí)之,持行斫株,賣之以供微命。用斧欲盡,會(huì)見外國(guó)治生大估客,名曰薩薄,見斧識(shí)之,便問老公:「賣此斧不?」老公言:「我仰此斧活,不賣?!顾_薄復(fù)言:「與公絹百疋,何以不賣?」公不應(yīng)和。薩薄復(fù)言:「與公二百疋?!构銗澣徊粯?。薩薄復(fù)言:「嫌少當(dāng)益,公何以不樂?與五百疋?!构愦筇淇?。薩薄復(fù)問公:「緝少當(dāng)益,何以啼哭?」公言:「我不恨絹少,恨我愚癡。此斧本長(zhǎng)尺半,斫地以盡,余有五十,猶得五百疋絹,是以為恨耳。」薩薄復(fù)言:「勿有遺恨,今與公千疋絹?!辜幢闫迫秩?,薪火燒之,盡成貴寶。(轉(zhuǎn)引自《經(jīng)律異相》卷四十四,《大正藏》第五十三冊(cè)第二三三頁(yè))
白話:
從前有群賊一道行劫,搶來許多財(cái)物,就共同分了。其他都是多少一樣地平分,只有鹿野出的欽婆羅衣顏色不是很好,就列為下等物,給最劣的賊。那下劣者得了,恚恨不已,嘆說道:不公平、不合算。他拿到城里去賣,許多富貴長(zhǎng)者給了他很高的價(jià)錢,一人所得數(shù)倍于其他伙伴,方才大歡喜。
就好比世人不知道布施到底是有報(bào)還是無報(bào),便稍稍行了點(diǎn)布施,結(jié)果得以生于天上,享受到無量的歡樂,方才悔恨起來,后悔不廣行布施,猶如欽婆羅衣后來賣得大價(jià)錢,才開始高興起來。布施也是這樣,少施多得,方自我慶幸起來,后又悔恨不多做一點(diǎn)。
