百喻經(jīng)之九五: 二鴿喻

　　昔有雌雄二鴿共同一巢，秋果熟時(shí)，取果滿(mǎn)巢。于其后時(shí)，果干減少，唯半巢在。雄嗔雌曰：“取果勤苦，汝獨(dú)食之，唯有半在。”

　　Once upon a time, there were two doves, male and female, which lived together in a nest. They filled their nest with fruit seed that grew up during the fall. Later, the fruit dried and shrank to fill but half of the nest. The male was in a temper and said to the female, "We have been working hard together for the fruit. Now you have eaten it alone. It's half of what it was.

　　雌鴿答言：“我不獨(dú)食，果自減少。”

　　The female replied, "I haven't eaten it alone. For the fruit has shrunk by itself."

　　雄鴿不信，嗔恚而言：“非汝獨(dú)食，何由減少?”即便以嘴啄雌鴿殺。

　　Incredulous, the male angrily said, "If it has not been you alone who had eaten, how could it grow so much less now?" Then he pecked the female to death.

　　未經(jīng)幾日，天降大雨，果得濕潤(rùn)，還復(fù)如故。雄鴿見(jiàn)已，方生悔恨：“彼實(shí)不食，我妄殺他。”即悲鳴命喚雌鴿：“汝何處去!”

　　A few days later, it happened to rain heavily. The fruit got moist and grew to its former size. On seeing it, the male regretfully realized that she really had not eaten and that he had wrongly killed her. He then cried bitterly and called out to her: "Where have you gone?"

　　凡夫之人，亦復(fù)如是。顛倒在懷，妄取欲樂(lè)，不觀無(wú)常，犯于重禁，悔不于后，竟何所及。后唯悲嘆，如彼愚鴿。

　　This is also held to be true with the common people. Leading a disorderly life, people indulge in wild pleasures. They think nothing of impermanence when breaking major commandments. It will be too late for them to repent afterwards. It only remains for them to give vent to their sadness with sighs like the stupid dove.

　　白話(huà)：

　　曾有雌雄兩只鴿子，同住在一個(gè)巢里。秋天果子熟時(shí)，叨取了滿(mǎn)滿(mǎn)一巢。后來(lái)，果子干縮，只成半巢了。雄鴿訓(xùn)責(zé)雌鴿道：「叨來(lái)果子，辛勤勞苦，你獨(dú)自偷吃，只剩一半?！勾气澊鸬溃骸肝覜](méi)偷吃，果子自己減少下去的?！剐埒澆恍?，怒道：「不是你獨(dú)自吃了，怎么會(huì)減少?」就啄殺了雌鴿。沒(méi)過(guò)幾日，天降大雨，果子受了濕潤(rùn)，又恢復(fù)到原先的一巢。雄鴿見(jiàn)了，方悔恨起來(lái)：「她的確沒(méi)吃，我錯(cuò)殺了她?！贡惚Q著叫喚雌鴿：「你哪兒去了?」

　　凡夫之人也是這樣，心中存著是非顛倒的觀念，迷執(zhí)地追求五欲的快樂(lè)，不系心思，觀察事物的流動(dòng)變遷，犯了殺、盜、淫、妄之類(lèi)重大禁戒，后來(lái)悔恨了，畢竟已無(wú)可挽回，只有悲嘆不已，如那只愚鴿一般。
