Karzai Asks for UN Support

From Kabul Afghanistan to ground zero, yellow roses from the leader of Afghanistan.

Karzai : I v’e come here to bring you these flowers from Afghan families to American families. We have that sharing of pain with you. A lot of pain, it’s from here. ”

The plans to attack the World Trade Center towers were hatched【孵化】 in Afghanistan. Karzai said he had visited the towers once before and almost forgot they were gone as he headed towards them. Karzai compared the tower’s fate to the blowing up of religious statues【雕像】back home by the Taliban last year.

Karzai: “It’s as horrific(1) as the destruction of Buddha【佛像】 in Afghanistan. It’s the destruction of life itself, of people”.

Karzai wants to protect his population now from Taliban and warl-ord【軍閥】 resistance(2) to a new national government. For the first time he asked the UN security council to beef up the number of international peacekeepers and dispatch(3) them to all parts of Afghanistan and not just the capital Kabul like now.

Karzai: “We hope that you would authorize(4) an extension(5) and expansion(6) of the mandate【托管】 of these forces.”

That would require a new Security Council resolution(7), which is no sure thing, despite the political charms(8) of the visiting Afghan leader.

“Certainly if Chairman Karzai is proposing it, it’s something that we and the other members of the UN security council will have to look at in due course.”

Senior UN officials privately(9) wonder how nations can proudly support the fragile(10) Karzai administration【政局】 but not back up their words with troops. But the 17 nations contributing(11) forces are hesitant(12)to be an occupying(13)army in a lawless land. Richard Roth CNN United Nations.

I’ve come here to bring you these flowers from Afghan families to American families.
We have that sharing of pain with you.
