Russia Will Only Pay Part of the Interest on Its Debts

Russia: Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov says Russia will only pay part of the interest (1)on its debt owed to major lending nations. Mr. Cosionov says Russia will pay interest only on loans from 1989 and 1990. He also said there is not enough money in the government’s budget(2) for full debt repayment(3). Major lending nations want Russia to use money from oil exports(4) to help pay debt from the period of Soviet rule. The Russian government says it wants to delay payment on its debt. Any changes must wait until representatives(5) from the International Monetary Fund go to Russia in about a month.
