I  remember,  I  remember

The  house  where  I  was  born,

The  little  window  where  the  sun

Came  peeping  m  at  morn(1);

He  never  came  a  wink  too  soon,

Nor  brought  too  long  a  day,(2)

But  now  I  often  wish  the  night

Had  borne  my  breath  away  I(3)

I  remember,  I  remember

The  roses  red  and  white,

The  violets,  and  the  lily-cups,

Those  flowers  made  of  light  !(4)

The  lilacs  where  the  robin  built,

And  where  my  brother  set

The  laburnum  on  his  birth-day,--

The  tree  is  living  yet  !

I  remember,  I  remember

Where  I  was  used  to  swing(5),

And  thought  the  air  must  rush  as  fresh

To  swallows  on  the  wing(6);

My  spirit  flew  in  feathers  then,

That  is  so  heavy  now,

And  summer  pools  could  hardly  cool

The  fever  on  my  brow!

The  fir-trees  dark  and  high;

I  used  to  think  their  slender  tops

Were  close  against  the  sky:

It  was  a  childish  ignorance,

But  now  't  is  little  joy

To  know  I'm  further  off  from  heaven(7)

Than  when  I  was  a  boy.

還有紫羅蘭和百合花瓣，

那些光彩斑斕的花朵!

那知更鳥筑巢的紫丁香，

我弟弟在他生日那天

將金鏈花種在它旁邊--

這棵樹至今生機(jī)勃勃!

我記得，我記得

我常去蕩秋千的地方，

心想那撲向飛翔著的燕子的清風(fēng)

必定是同樣地令人心曠神怡，

我的心啊，那時猶如插翅飛翔，

現(xiàn)在卻沉重?zé)o比，

即使夏日的水潭也難以

消退我額頭上的高熱!

我記得，我記得

那些樅樹蒼郁而高聳，

我常思量它們纖細(xì)的樹梢

幾乎緊貼著天空，

那是孩子的天真無知，

但現(xiàn)在我卻很少歡樂，

由于知道自己離開天國

比兒時更加遙遠(yuǎn)。

(1)  morn＝morning，常用于詩歌中。

(2) Nor brought too long a day：也不使人感到白天太長。暗指童年快樂，

不覺察時光之流逝。

(3)Had  borne  my  breath  away：帶走我的生命。breath 代表"生命'。這句

暗指老年覺得長夜漫漫，但愿能長眠安息。

(4)Those  flowers  made  of  light；由光彩組成的花朵。指花朵色彩鮮艷。

(5)I  Was  used  to  swing：was  used  to 解作"習(xí)慣于"，swing 用作名詞，

解作"秋千的擺動"。由于 swing 作動詞時，可解作"上絞刑"，因此不使用  I used

to  swing 的結(jié)構(gòu)。

(6)  on  the  wing：正在飛翔的。

(7)  I'm  further  off  from  heaven：離開天國更加遙遠(yuǎn)。這句話感嘆自己

年老時不如童年時天真無邪，那樣圣潔。
