Scene Ⅰ
John: What a marvellous snowman!
Julia: But he hasn't got any eyes. I'm going to give him some eyes.
John: Here are two stones, one for his right eye and one for his left eye.
Tony: I'm going to give him some buttons for his coat. One, two, three, four, five, six. Six buttons for his coat.
(The sound of a coming train)
John: Listen!
Tony: What is it ?
John: Listen! I can hear a train. Can you hear It?
Julia: Yes, I can. And look ! Look! Look down there! There's the train! It's going very fast, isn't it?
Tony: That must be the fast train to London. It's the express train. It doesn't stop at the station, does it?
Julia: No, it doesn't.
Tony: But the train is stopping. It is stopping. Look!
John: Why is the train stopping?
Tony: I don't know. Oh, yes, I can see now. There's an enormous snowdrift on the line. We must do something.
Julia: We must do something. What can we do?

John: I know what we can do. Tony, you go on your sledge to the farm. You can go quickly down the hill. Tell Daddy about the train and the snowdrift.
Tony: But what can Daddy do?
John: He can go and help to dig the snow away.
Julia: But what can we do, John?
John: You and I can go down the hill on our sledges and tell the man at the station about the train and the snowdrift.
Julia: All right. Well, let's go. We must hurry.
Tony: Ready, let's go.
Julia: Mr. Barker! Mr. Barker!
Mr. Barker: Hello, Julia! Hello, John! What's the matter?
Julia: The express train, Mr. Barker! The express train!
Mr. Barker: Oh, it's coming now. It's the three o'clock train to London. You're going to catch it? Hah ! Hah! It doesn't stop here, you know. It doesn't stop at this station.
Julia: The train's in a snowdrift. A very big snowdrift. It's an enormous snowdrift. The train can't go.
Mr. Barker: What? The train cant go? We must hurry up! We, we must hurry up! I must telephone the next station! Then I must go with some men and we must dig away the snow. The train must get to London on time. Thank you!
