Dolphins  (151)

Dolphins are a type of small whale. They are mammals that live in the ocean, and they are interesting to scientists because of their intelligence, their speed, and some unusual characteristics of their bodies.

People have known for many years that dolphins could make many different types of sounds. People at sea also noticed that the dolphins often rode for a long time on the pressure wave of a moving ship, either in front of or behind the ship.

Since the dolphins' natural home is the sea, it is difficult to study their normal behavior in captivity. Recently, however, scientists have been able to study the sounds of dolphins. They make low-pitched sounds like barks, whistles, and screams. They also make very high-pitched sounds, much higher than the ones that people are able to hear.

In recent tests, scientists have also learned that dolphins can remember sounds they have heard before. They can remember sounds about as well as people can. One difficulty for scientists who are trying to study the language of dolphins is that none of their sounds are really like human sounds. As a result, scientists have not been able to analyze these sounds or find any evidence of a human type of language among dolphins.

Some scientists are especially interested in dolphins because of their unusual speed and swimming ability. A special quality of their skin makes it possible for them to move quickly through the water with the least amount of turbulence. Scientists have used information from studies of the body shape and movement of dolphins to improve the designs of ships and airplanes.

The Giant Of The Sea  (34)

There are thousands of kinds of animals that live in the sea. One of the most interesting of these animals is the whale.

The whale is the largest animal in the world. It is not a fish. It is a mammal. It breathes air through its lungs as people do. The whale can stay under the water for more than a half hour. But then it must come to the top for air. There are more than 90 kinds of whales. The biggest is the blue whale. Some whales have teeth, but other whales have baleen instead of teeth. Baleen is like a curtain of bone that hangs from the whale's jaw. The whale's nose is a hole on top of its body. It blows air out through the hole. When the whale's breath hits the air it becomes water. If you watch the whale you will see its fountain of water every now and then. Most whales have blue eyes, one on each side of the head. They also have ears. The ears are hard to see, because they are in the skin. Whales have good ears. They use them even more than their eyes. The whales send out signals to help them dive, travel and find food. The sounds bounce back and let the whale know how far away things are. Whales can travel in very cold water but they never get cold. Their skin is not thick but they have a lot of fat under their skin. It is called blubber. Whales are very smart animals. They talk to each other. They make many kinds of sounds. Scientists are studying these sounds. If we understood the sounds we would be able to talk to whales. Maybe some day we will. Scientists believe that whales live for 20 to 30 years. They can not live on land. Their bones are not strong enough to hold up their muscles on land. They must stay in the water or they would die. Most whales are gentle. They will not hurt people. They are kind to each other. They will help a sick whale or a whale who is in trouble. Mother whales are very good to their babies.

Whales have few enemies. People are their worst enemies. For hundreds of years people have gone whale hunting. Now some of the big whales are hard to find. Many countries have decided that whale hunting is not good. They want to save the whales. It would be terrible if we let people take all the whales from the sea. It would be sad if we learn to speak to whales and then we have no whales to speak to. Let's hope these wonderful giants of the sea will always be there.
