Notes
The first organized system of post offices in America was created
by the British Parliament in 1711 and the mails were carried over post
roads. Postage stamps were first used in the U.S. in 1847. The postal
savings system started in 1911, and parcel post in 1913. Mail service
by railroad was instituted in 1862, and airmail in 1918.
The U.S. Postal Service now operates as an independent agency
within the government, with the goal of becoming self-supporting by
1984; it has operated at a deficit for many years.
