A: So Rachel, you said that in your home country, New Zealand, there're lots of birds that don't fly?
蕾切爾，你之前說過，你的祖國新西蘭有很多不會飛的鳥。
 
B: Yes, there are a lot of birds that don't fly.
對，有很多鳥不會飛。
 
A: Wow, so I only knew of the kiwi and of course the penguin, but I didn't know of other ones. So first the kiwi. It doesn't fly, right?
哇哦，我只知道幾維鳥和企鵝不會飛，不知道其他不會飛的鳥類。首先來說幾維鳥。這種鳥不會飛，對吧？
 
B: That's the famous one.
幾維鳥因不會飛而聞名。
 
A: Right.
對。
 
B: They don't fly but they can run very fast. I've seen them.
它們不會飛，不過它們跑得非?？?。我看到過。
 
A: Like and are the kiwi all over? Like are there different types of kiwi?
到處都能看到幾維鳥嗎？幾維鳥是否有不同種類？
 
B: Yeah, there are several different varieties. They're very rare though, and they're nocturnal.
對，有很多種不同的幾維鳥。不過幾維鳥非常稀有，而且它們是夜行動物。
 
A: Oh, nocturnal.
哦，夜行動物。
 
B: I'd say most New Zealanders have never seen one in the wild. I've only seen them in Kiwi parks.
我認為大多數新西蘭人從來沒在野生環(huán)境中看到過幾維鳥。我只在新西蘭公園中看到過幾維鳥。
 
A: Oh, really.
哦，真的嗎？
 
B: Yeah, you don't see them.

A: So, I thought they'd be like kangaroos in Australia, or something like you go and there's one.

B: No, they're very precious and very rare. One that you see more often is the pukeko which is ... it looks a little bit like a stork I suppose except it's dark blue.

A: What's it called?

B: Pukeko.

B: Ah, yeah, and they're a lot more commom. And takahe is another one.
對，它們更常見。還有短翅水雞也很常見。
 
A: So the first one ...

B: You can see them along the side of the road. When you're driving through the countryside they're much more common.
你可以在路邊看到它們。開車經過鄉(xiāng)村時經常能看到。
 
A: So this pukeko, does it fly?

B: No, they don't fly.

A: Really, and it's like a stork. It has long legs?

B: It has quite long legs. Yeah, it a very cute little bird, but it's very dark.

A: How tall is it? Like up to your knee? Up to your hip?

B: Up to your knees.

A: Really.

B: Cute little bird.

A: That's awesome. So what was the other one you mentioned?
真不錯。你剛提到的另一種鳥是什么來著？
 
B: Takahe. It's very similar looking to that one. It's a little different. It's difficult to tell apart.
短翅水雞。這種鳥和紫水雞非常像。只有一點兒不同，很難區(qū)分。
 
A: Really, and it's also kind of dark blueish.
是嗎？短翅水雞也是深藍色。
 
B: Yeah, another one's a kakapo. A very famous one. It's New Zealand's flightless green parrot. It's kind of like a large fat parrot that lives on the ground.
對，另一種鳥名為鸮鸚鵡，非常有名。這是新西蘭不會飛的綠色鸚鵡。這種鸚鵡體型龐大且肥胖，生活在地上。
 
A: Really.
真的嗎？
 
B: It's extremely rare. I'm not sure what the numbers are now, but around twenty years ago I think there were only 45 left.
這種鸚鵡極為稀有。我不確定現在現存多少只，不過大約20年前其數量僅剩下45只。
 
A: Oh, that is rare.
哦，那很稀有。
 
B: Extremely rare, so there's an intensive breeding program for them, and of course nobody's seen those in the wild.
極為稀有，所以有關部門實施了鸮鸚鵡集中復育計劃，當然沒人在野外看到過鸮鸚鵡。
 
A: Yeah, you have to be careful or it'll go like the way of the Tasmanian tiger.
一定要小心，不然就會像塔斯馬尼亞虎一樣滅絕。
Rachel: Yeah, they breed and they nest on the ground. They lay their eggs onthe ground, so they're very vulnerable to introduced predators, to any animals.
 
B：對，鸮鸚鵡在地上繁衍、建巢。它們在地上生蛋，所以極易受到外來捕食者和其他任何動物的襲擊。
