A: how are you doing?

你最近怎么樣?

B:  I'm ok. I wish I could say the same for my friend.

A: what happened to him?

他怎么了?

B:  he was arrested by the police for drinking and driving.

A: was it his first offence?

B:  unfortunately not. He was charged with a DUI when he was in university.

可惜不是.他上大學(xué)的時(shí)候就因?yàn)樽砭岂{車被起訴過一次.

A: what happened to him then?

那次他后來怎么樣的?

B:  not much; it was a minor offence back then. He got away with a fine of $500.

沒怎樣,起訴情節(jié)較輕.他后來交了500美元的罰金就被釋放了.

A: did they take his license away?

他沒有被吊銷駕照嗎?

B:  no, they were really easy on him. The problem is that that was a long time ago. They are much tougher on crime now.

沒有,他們對(duì)他實(shí)在判得太輕了.可問題是那是很久以前的事情了,現(xiàn)在對(duì)這種問題的處罰要嚴(yán)厲的多.

A: what do you think will happen to him?

B:  well, he'll definitely lose his license, pay a fine, and maybe even spend some time in jail.

A: that doesn't sound too promising. Does he have a defence lawyer?

這樣的話他的前途可就不怎么美妙了.他請(qǐng)辯護(hù)律師了嗎?

B:  not yet. If we can't find a lawyer for him, then the state will appoint him with one.

還沒有.如果我們不能幫他找到律師的話,法庭會(huì)給他指派一名.

A: my sister is a lawyer. I can ask her if she can help him.

我姐姐就是個(gè)律師.我問問她愿不愿意幫忙.

B:  that'd be great! I know he'd appreciate your help.
