A swarm of flying ants big enough to confuse weather radar has been caught flying over southern England.
The "insect clutter", as the UK's Met Office put it, was picked up on on Wednesday.
"We knew it was dry in the south of England, and yet the radar was showing this very light precipitation across the south," forecaster Simon King told BBC News.
"You can tell it's not rainfall because it has that eerie look to it. It doesn't quite match what rainfall looks like."
Flying ants!!!
Swarms of them flying into the sky in S Eng are being picked up as rain on the radar image this morning

While flying ants are common in the region, this was the biggest swarm King says he's ever seen.
"For it to actually to appear on the radar imagery, that's something certainly incredible, and I just feel sorry for all the people who have to experience those flying ants."

The very concept baffled Met Office followers on social media. The forecaster held a poll asking followers what they thought it was, and most guessed dust.
"We know this to be insect clutter (flying ants) based on inspection of raw reflectivity," it said afterwards.
