Aaron and Erin Clark thought they were living their dream home after purchasing and renovating a 109-year-old house in Jefferson City, Mo.
But that dream quickly turned into a nightmare.
In August 2017, they purchased the 5,000-square-foot historic home — known as the Hobo Hill House — at 500 E. Miller St. and had restored it when weird, inexplicable things started to happen.
“We thought we were experiencing a lot of paranormal activity at the house, which, telling you, sounds silly,” Aaron told the News Tribune.
The TV, lights, space heaters and kitchen sink would turn on by themselves. The family’s pet pit bull would not go near certain areas like the stairs. And the couple heard frequent loud bangs, creaks and voices saying “hi” as they entered the house. But the most shocking incident involved the couple’s 8-year-old daughter.
The little girl started having nightmares and began sleepwalking. “She was standing outside of her bed staring out the window, and she was still crying, just sobbing, I could see her shoulders going up and down, and I was like ‘Raena, what’s wrong? Are you okay? Are you okay?'” Aaron told KRGC TV. “And she turned around, and it scared the life out of me because it went from crying to this Cheshire [cat] big smile, kind of like the joker.” Aaron described his daughter as “wide-eyed and shaking” and appearing “possessed.”
One other experience convinced the couple the house was haunted. “The craziest thing, besides my daughter, at least in my opinion, was both my wife and I, from the corner of our eyes, saw a tall man in a suit and top hat,” Aaron said.
All of this was too much for the family, so they decided to leave just seven months after moving in. But instead of selling the house, they’ve decided to turn it into a short-term rental on Airbnb and are playing up the spookiness.
“We didn’t think it would be right selling to another family knowing what we know,” Aaron said. “We’ll just turn lemons into lemonade, and since the prison is so close and people in Jeff are interested in that sort of thing, we’ll just turn it into a short-term Airbnb, and people can stay and have experiences.”
According to Aaron, though, the first group to rent the home “couldn’t stay the whole night.”
While that might deter some, it certainly will attract many ghost hunters. And they’re experiencing even more interest since the home was featured on the Travel Channel’s “The Dead Files” on Aug. 1. The episode, called “Not My Child,” detailed the paranormal activity and revealed findings that the couple says confirms their suspicions.
“I was happy to know we weren’t crazy,” Aaron added, “that what we were feeling and experiencing was correct.”
