We’ve all seen genius furniture designs, like those foldable beds and tables that allow you to have plenty of space when the object is not used. And then there are questionable designs that can simply be amusing or, at other times, even infuriating. Some people would argue about what category this table falls into, but Tumblr users definitely weren’t here to argue practicality.
This table and bench set was created by Jay Watson, a designer from Oxford, United Kingdom, who is “inspired by the thought that, often the shadows an object casts are of as much interest as the object itself”. Titled “Linger A Little Longer”, this project is “a deceptively understated design with a dynamic twist”.
This thermochromic furniture set by Jay Watson changes when exposed to warmth
Both the table and benches are covered in a thermochromic finish which responds to any source of heat on it, be it a mug, a plate or a human touch. Once the surface gets warm, it leaves an ephemeral mark behind in the shape of the heat source.
The artist wanted to showcase “how ‘precious’ we can become about the functionality of furniture” as well as comment on how oblivious we can sometimes be to the things we interact with and the effect we have.
As poetic and artistic as the message behind the furniture is, unfortunately, once Tumblr users got a glimpse of it, they had a different set of ideas about the whole thermochromic deal. From funny comments about leaving butt marks to frightening prospects of some uncanny interactions, the users of the big T left a trail of comments expressing how the project made them feel. And, well, it’s definitely a rather entertaining read!
Tumblr users, of course, didn’t miss the golden opportunity to express their thoughts on this design
