‘Unluckiest guy in America’ bitten on head by venomous snake

The “unluckiest guy in America” was bitten on the head by a venomous copperhead snake that happened to climb a tree, according to a report.

Mississippi deer hunter Tyler Hardy found himself in excruciating pain Wednesday after the freak attack in Jackson, the Clarion Ledger reports.

Hardy, of Philadelphia, Miss., was taking the last of his dog pack back to a truck when he encountered a flooded ditch. He found a narrow spot where he could jump across. When he leaned forward to jump, he felt a sudden, burning pain.

Stunned, he soon saw the scaly culprit.

“I backed up and shined my light to see what was in the tree and I saw the snake coiled up on a limb,” Hardy said. “It struck at me again and fell out of the tree that time.”

Bites from copperheads are rarely fatal, but can cause severe tissue loss and secondary infections, experts note.

Within minutes the hunter felt “burning and swelling” four inches above his ear.

“It was a lot of severe burning. By the time I got in the truck the burning was spreading. It started spreading rapidly, the swelling,” he told the Ledger.

The two hunters kept calm, and Hardy called his wife and Neshoba General hospital to alert the emergency medical team.

Once at the hospital, doctors administered five vials of Crofab, an antivenom. He was then airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

A “struggling” Hardy was feeling “a lot better” after a day in the hospital and released into the care of his wife, who is a nurse practitioner.

Copperheads, common in Mississippi, typically climb trees in the summer, to gobble newly emerging cicadas, herpetologist Terry Vandeventer told the paper.
