We’ve talked a lot on this site about 3-D printed homes and the possibility for eco friendly building with them. New Story and ICON are making this a reality in Mexico where they are printing the first 3D printed community of 50 homes.
The homes are built by one machine, like a giant printer, from the bottom up. It uses a type of cement mix and takes 24 hours to print the small homes. This is just the frame though. Workers are still needed to put on doors, roofing, and run the plumbing and electric.
Though the homes are small, they are mighty and can withstand earthquakes and hurricanes allowing them to be passed down through generations. Ultimately the company wants to turn this sort of housing into an open source system so that non-profits can take advantage of this method of building fast and cheap homes.
