Editor's note: cross-hatching is an interesting technique. It had developed in Western art in 15th century, following the advances of hatching technique in Middle Ages. It's principle is very simple: you place 2 lines at an angle with one another to create shading, or, in my case, a lighting effect. It's used in essentially linear media like drawing, printmaking, engraving, and etching. It can be either loose and approximate or strict and calculated, drawn with a ruler—the object usually defines which one is better to use in which case.
