I visited the neighboring villages, and added greatly to my stock of knowledge, by noting their habits and customs, and conversing with their sages and great men. This rambling propensity strengthened with my years. Books of voyages and travels became my passion, and in devouring their contents, I neglected the regular exercises of the school. Further reading and thinking, though they brought this vague inclination into more reasonable bounds, only served to make it more decided. 游歷記述

我向來(lái)鐘愛(ài)訪歷新境，采風(fēng)問(wèn)俗。自幼我就開(kāi)始旅行，多次探查我所成長(zhǎng)的城市的偏僻之處、陌生之所。這讓我父母飽受虛驚，當(dāng)然也讓那些街頭報(bào)訊員獲益頗豐。隨著我漸漸成長(zhǎng)到少年，我探查的范圍也擴(kuò)大了。無(wú)數(shù)個(gè)假日的午后，我都消磨在鄰近鄉(xiāng)村的漫游中。不管哪個(gè)歷史名勝還是哪個(gè)神話圣地，我都悉數(shù)知曉；不管哪個(gè)殺人越貨之所還是哪個(gè)鬼魂出沒(méi)之地，我皆如數(shù)家珍。訪察鄰村時(shí)，我觀察村民們的風(fēng)俗習(xí)慣，并和其中的學(xué)者名士相談，這些都大大增加了我的知識(shí)儲(chǔ)備。有一個(gè)漫長(zhǎng)的夏日，我竟游歷到了一座很遠(yuǎn)的小山頭?？v目遠(yuǎn)眺，方圓數(shù)英里的無(wú)名大地盡收眼底，我驚奇地發(fā)現(xiàn)，原來(lái)我所居住的星球是如此的廣袤。
