"I wanted to quit the industry after that ended," Gosselaar said at the panel, moderated by PEOPLE. "That's one of those, you feel like in your lifetime you're not going to be handed opportunities like that, so for that to pass in the fashion that it did it was sort of a gut punch. That's a role though, that I don't make light of it, but I had to go therapy with my wife."

Strong reviews did not, however, translate into strong ratings and the 10-episode first season also became its last.

Gosselaar admitted that while he loved Pitch, it was beginning to have an adverse effect on his personal life. He found himself bringing his character's "really aggressive baseball player" attitude home with him.

Gosselaar credits another one of his shows that he loved but was canceled for actually improving his paternal skills. The 49-year-old starred on the Black-ish spinoff Mixed-ish from 2019 to 2021 as the father of an adolescent Rainbow Johnson and says the show made him "a better father."

Though he's had some rough luck with season renewals over the years, Gosselaar didn't let the cancellation of Pitch throw him off acting forever. He's since reprised the role that made him famous on the underrated (and also cancelled) reboot of Saved by the Bell, guest starred as himself on HBO's critical darling Barry, and is currently starring on the recently renewed ABC police procedural Will Trent.
