郭寶昌在藝術領域是公認的“有豪氣、有面子”,第五代導演集體稱他“寶爺”,被他提攜的后輩中就有陳凱歌、張藝謀、田壯壯的名字。在廣西電影制片廠任職時,郭寶昌扶植張藝謀、陳凱歌等導演推出《一個和八個》、《黃土地》等作品,奠定了中國第五代導演的基礎。張藝謀曾說:“沒有郭寶昌,就沒有中國第五代導演”。

《大宅門》是郭寶昌生命的全部,晚年,這部作品相繼搬上話劇和京劇的舞臺,走遍全國,以不同的藝術形式留予后人。童年看戲、少年迷戲、青年癡戲,中年思考戲,暮年研究戲,郭寶昌在80多歲的年紀寫就《了不起的游戲》一書,以自己的方式講述京劇的無法割舍與無法冷落。自稱急赤白咧趕緊把想要干的事情都干完了,就是怕再不寫就沒機會了,而這也是他對得起老祖宗的方式。

晚年雖患病,但郭寶昌仍筆耕不輟,80歲提筆,83歲含血帶淚的60萬字長篇小說《大宅門》定稿,他說,“每到大風起兮的時候,我的思緒總隨著風回到那個年代……”如今,心愿達成的郭寶昌隨宅門風云而去,這一輩子做了太多事,又好像只做了一件事,那就是《大宅門》。
