Legendary punk rocker and poet Patti Smith is recovering and "in good health conditions" after being hospitalized in Italy for a sudden illness.

The Local Health Authority of Bologna told the Los Angeles Times that the singer was discharged from the hospital Wednesday after "a short period of observation in emergency," adding that the the medical team hopes to see Smith back on stage soon, after "an appropriate period of rest."

Smith, 76, was set to perform at the Teatro Duse on Tuesday night when the venue announced on social media that she was unable to take the stage due to a "sudden illness." Smith was in the midst of an eight-date tour around Italy, having most recently played the at the Modena Cathedral on Saturday, along with stops in Schio and Siena.

Smith's upcoming stops in Venice and Milan have reportedly been canceled, though there's no word yet whether or when they'll be rescheduled. She is currently still scheduled for three more shows stateside to close out the year: a Dec. 27 concert in Chicago and two shows in Brooklyn, on Dec. 29 and 30.

Known by titles including "punk poet laureate" and "godmother of punk," Smith rose to prominence as a singer in the '70s, after releasing her acclaimed debut album, Horses. She went on to co-write her hit song "Because the Night" with Bruce Springsteen, which reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. Smith was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 and has also penned a celebrated memoir, Just Kids, and multiple poetry collections.

The singer previously opened up about her health in a 2020 interview with The Guardian, in which she spoke about struggling throughout the coronavirus pandemic due to a lifelong bronchial condition.
