Tommy Lee is "forever grateful" after a recent hand surgery that's allowed him to twirl his drumsticks once again.
The Mötley Crüe drummer, 61, shared an update with fans on Saturday, three weeks after undergoing a hand surgery to address "debilitating issues" as a performer.
Among the issues he faced was Dupuytren's contracture — a thickening and tightening of tissue in the hand — and carpal tunnel syndrome, Lee wrote on Instagram. But after Lee underwent surgery with Dr. Glenn Cohen, he now has "my life back and my money makers."
"Well kids, it’s show n tell time… hope this doesn’t wreck your lunch," Lee wrote alongside several graphic photos of his hand. "Only 3 weeks ago I underwent a hand surgery by @drcohenhandsurgeon. He addressed 2 debilitating issues for me as a drummer, keyboard player and pretty much everything to do with my right hand."
"And yesterday was f------ monumental for me to the point of tears …. I have my life back and my money makers," Lee added. "And for you drummers and musicians out there I can say it’s possible to fix!"
Lee then detailed how he's once again able to twirl his drumsticks — after years of not being able to do so — as his hand issues "are now gone." In a video at the end of the Instagram carousel, the rocker and his surgeon explained how one of his fingers is no longer bent, now allowing him to "make the twirl."
"That's crazy," Lee said in the clip. "Dude, that's a beautiful thing."
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, Dupuytren's contracture is believed to be hereditary with an exact cause unknown. The condition, which is more common in men and often starts in middle age, causes tender lumps in the palm which can eventually "cause thick bands of tissue under the skin in the palm of the hand," making the fingers pull forward.
The most common treatment for "advanced cases" is surgery, where a surgeon can remove the thickened tissue to increase mobility of the fingers.
"Truly a pleasure to get Tommy tuned up and ready to rock," Cohen wrote on his Instagram Story.
Lee's next show with Mötley Crüe is scheduled for May 2024 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, per the band's website. The group also will be making multiple festival and state fair appearances throughout the summer in North America.
