The trend of semicolon tattoos was started by Project Semicolon. It encourages people to draw (or tattoo) semicolons on their bodies as a way of presenting hope and love to those struggling with depression, anxiety, suicide, self-harm and other forms of mental illness.

分號(hào)紋身的潮流最初由“分號(hào)項(xiàng)目”發(fā)起，鼓勵(lì)人們?cè)谏砩袭嫽蚴羌y上“分號(hào)”，借此向那些正與抑郁、焦慮、自殺傾向、自殘等精神疾病抗?fàn)幍娜藗儌鬟_(dá)希望和關(guān)愛的訊息。

Project Semicolon’s website explains the idea behind the tattoo: “A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.”
