[00:30.74]Do you know the story of Noah's ark
[00:33.77]Noah lived a long, long time ago
[00:37.26]He was a good ma
[00:39.06]God told Noah to build an ark and to gather his family and two of every animal( one female and one male ) into the ark because it was going to rain and the world was going to be destroyed.
[00:55.30]So Noah gathered two of every animal including snakes, elephants, giraffes, cows and even skunk
[01:06.02]It rained for 40 days and 40 night
[01:10.24]After the rain stopped, the water dried u
[01:14.52]One year later, Noah let the animals out of the ark

[01:46.34]Direction: Listen to the dialog and choose the best answer for each item.
[01:53.83]Fear of Spiders
[01:55.99]W: Why do you think people are afraid of tarantulas?
[01:59.59]M: Well, I guess it's because people are afraid of all spiders, and tarantulas happen to the biggest of all the spider
[02:07.76]And maybe it's also because some spiders really are very poisonou
[02:12.62]In California for example---living in most of the garages in California---you get black widow spider
[02:20.40]which are quite small but they are certainly more dangerous than tarantulas.
[02:25.66]W: But personally you aren't afraid of tarantulas?
[02:29.15]M: Well I shouldn't be frightened of tarantulas, simply because I know that they aren't really dangerous---all they can do is to give you a small bit
[02:38.83]but it's not poisonou
[02:41.21]And yet I must say I don't like to pick them up
[02:44.88]But you see, some people keep pet mice and pet rabbits and wel
[02:50.75]they can give you a much worse bite than a tarantula ever coul
[02:54.56]And yet people aren't frightened of them.
[02:57.52]W: Why do you think people are frightened of spiders?
[03:00.65]M: I don't know---it's very strang
[03:03.82]People are frightened of spiders and they are frightened of snake
[03:07.74]and, well obviously some spiders and some snakes really are poisonou
[03:13.93]But most snakes are harmless, and it's really strange that people are so frightened of spiders because it's quite difficult to find a spider that's really dangerous.
[03:24.84]Exercise 2
[03:27.00]Directions: Listen to the dialog again to check your answers to Exercise 1 and then discuss in pairs the following question.

[03:57.56]C: Yes. I'm looking for a pet for my son. Can you suggest anything?
[04:03.83]A: What kind of pet does he want? A traditional pet...a cat... or a dog? Or something unusual?
[04:11.71]C: Well, he'd like a snake or a crocodile, but he isn't going to get one.
[04:17.58]A: We've got a nice Alsatian dog at the moment.
[04:21.25]C: An Alsatian? Did you say "an Alsatian"? Oh no, I've read about them in the pape
[04:28.70]They're very big and savage.
[04:30.76]A: Oh, no, madam. They aren't as savage as some dogs.
[04:34.36]C: Really?
[04:35.47]A: Oh, yes. Last week we had a small do
[04:39.65]It was only as big as your handbag, but it was as savage as a tiger... it bit me three times!
[04:47.03]C: Perhaps not a dog, then.
[04:49.04]A: How about a cat?
[04:51.24]C: A cat? Hmm...they aren't as friendly as dogs, are they?
[04:56.32]A: No, but they don't eat as much as dogs eithe
[04:59.92]And they're very clean. They wash themselves every day.
[05:04.45]C: Hmm...
[05:05.60]A: Or how about a bird? A parrot or a budgie? We have both.
[05:11.15]C: Yes, but budgies don't need as much space as parrots, do they?
[05:16.55]A: That's true. Budgies are very popular because they are so easy to keep.
[05:22.42]C: Yes...but they're a bit noisy, aren't they? I want a quiet pet.
