[00:00.00]College-A New Experience
[00:04.78]College is a new and different experience for me.
[00:10.03]I'm away from home,so I have many things to adjust to.
[00:15.96]Being on my own, talking with friendly people,
[00:21.63]and having Fridays off-these are just some things I like about college.
[00:29.28]Living at college, first of all, gives me a sense of responsibility,
[00:36.94]of being on my own.
[00:40.49]My parents aren't around to say,
[00:45.14]"No,you're not going out tonight"or"Did you finish your homework?"
[00:51.98]Everything I do has to be my decision,
[00:57.13]and that gives me the responsibility of handling my own life.
[01:04.47]During the second week I was at college,
[01:09.83]I had to go out and look for a bank where I could open an account.
[01:16.49]Before that I looked in the phone book since I had no clue
[01:23.12]about any banks around here or where they were located.
[01:29.68]Someone told me about a good bank:Continental Federal Savings.
[01:36.44]I went to the bank and made decisions for myself
[01:41.98]-whether to have a checking
[01:46.03]or savings account and whether or not to get a MASTER card.
[01:52.69]That was one example of having responsibility
[01:58.15]now that I'm on my own and of making my own decisions.
[02:04.40]Friendly people:that's another aspect I like about college
[02:11.16]On my first day (and even now) people were nice to me.
[02:17.61]I came to Mary mount University here in Virginia from New York
[02:25.16]and -even though I'd been here before
[02:29.71]-I was a bit confused about where I was going.
[02:35.27]My mother and I drove in,
[02:39.92]not knowing the building we were supposed to go to,
[02:45.56]and the guard was especially nice:with a smile,
[02:51.42]he told us what building we were looking for
[02:56.98]and where we could park our car.
[03:01.42]My room was on the first floor of New Gerard,
[03:08.06]and I knew had to go through some glass dorrs
[03:13.91]-but my mother and I didn't know which ones.
[03:19.05]Some upperclassmen saw ne and asked,"Are you a new student?"
[03:25.69]When they found out I was looking for New Gerard,
[03:31.44]one said"Oh,just follow us;that's where we're going."
[03:38.78]Even now I feel comfortable in the dorm
[03:43.82]because there are friendly people around to talk with.
[03:49.77]Finally-to and to my likes of college
[03:55.34]-I love having Fridays off,
[03:59.67]I wouldn't be able to cope with five days of classes in a row.
[04:07.41]Also,I love to sleep in.One Thursday night,
[04:15.16]my roommate and I and the people across the hall went to Georgetown.
[04:22.92]We got in rather early the next morning,
[04:27.86]and my roommate(Juanita)and I decided to sleep in,
[04:34.70]something I couldn't do in high school.
[04:39.56]I do like things about college-being on my own,
[04:45.70]talking with friendly people, having Fridays off,
[04:51.37]but this doesn't mean I don't think about things at home.
[04:57.01]Although I like college,I can still get homesick:
[05:03.36]New York is a pretty good place,too.
