[00:45.37]I Have Never Used a Computer
[00:51.44]Janet decides it's time to learn how to use a computer,
[00:58.28]and goes to the computer room in her college.
[01:03.14]She asks someone there how to use the computer.
[01:08.60]The following is the conversation between Janet (J)
[01:15.36]and another student (AS) in the computer room.
[01:21.53]J: Excuse me, can you help me?
[01:27.69]AS: Oh, yeah, sure. What's the problem?
[01:32.26]J: Well, I've never used a computer before, I'm afraid,
[01:38.01]So I have very little idea what to do.
[01:42.97]AS: Oh, yeah, OK, sure,
[01:46.84]well you'd better start at the beginning then...
[01:51.39]Well, first you need to switch it on. (He switches on the computer.)
[01:56.24]OK. Now we've just got to wait for a minute
[02:02.20]or so while the computer checks itself out...
[02:06.77]now just wait. Right, here it is,
[02:12.62]you see this coloured screen, this is Windows 95.
[02:19.15]J: What is Windows 95?
[02:23.31]AS: Windows 95 is an operating system,
[02:28.06]which controls the hardware,
[02:32.14]reading from and writing to the disk,
[02:37.00]sending information to the printer and so forth.
[02:42.04]Now, move the mouse. You see the arrow on the screen?
[02:47.99]It is controlled by the mouse.
[02:52.43]Move the arrow to the "Start" icon at the bottom of the screen
[02:58.99]and click the left-hand button of your mouse
[03:04.06]and you will get a menu.
[03:07.90]J: What does the menu mean?
[03:11.97]AS: The menu is just the list of programs
[03:16.94]which are on the computer so you can choose the one you want.
[03:22.89]J: Well, I just want to do some typing, type my essay,
[03:29.45]so what do I want actually?
[03:33.81]AS: Right, you want the word processor,
[03:38.17]that is, the "Microsoft Word" in this computer.
[03:43.74]Point the cursor to "Program"
[03:48.00]and you can find some of the programs
[03:52.46]that come with Windows 95 (right, OK),
[03:56.72]that's it, OK. To start the typing program,
[04:02.47]click "Microsoft Word" now...
[04:07.75]There you are, blank screen.
[04:12.79]You could just start typing now, as if it's a typewriter.
[04:19.34]J: Er, OK... what if I make a mistake,
[04:25.22]I know it'll correct it, but how do I do that?
[04:30.79]AS: OK, um, well, the mouse you used before,
[04:37.55]you can use it to move the cursor
[04:41.81]to the front of the mistake and click,
[04:46.64]then press "Delete", and type in whatever you want to correct it to.
[04:53.59]Very important is saving your document so that you can go away,
[05:00.67]come back to it... In order to save your document,
[05:06.31]you should use your mouse to click the "File" menu
[05:11.35]and find "Save" function there.
[05:16.19]Now click the "Save " and see what happens.
[05:21.75]Now you can see it asks you for a name,
[05:27.31]so now you need to type in a name you want to call your document.
[05:33.79]J: OK, so if I call it by my name, Janet?
[05:39.72]AS: Right, OK, and press "Enter" again,
[05:45.05]and there you can see it's, er, it's saving it for you.
[05:51.24]J: OK, er, it seems quite easy actually.
[05:56.49]AS: The other thing you need to know is, um,
[06:01.17]how to finish, er, how to exit.
[06:05.84]I'll tell you what —
[06:09.40]I'll go and get on with my work over there and er,
[06:14.86]let me know when you've finished,
[06:18.91]and I'll come and help you exit.
[06:22.77]J: Oh thanks very much, you've been very helpful and kind. Thank you.
[06:28.94]Will you be here actually?
[06:33.01]AS: Yeah, I'm going to be here for the next couple of hours,
[06:37.74]so, er, sure.
[06:40.90]J: So if I get stuck you can help me?
[06:45.63]AS: Yes, of course. J: Thanks a lot.
