第20單元 完美無瑕的英語
An African chieftain flew to the United States to visitthe president. When he arrived at the airport, a hostof newsmen and television cameramen met him. Oneof the reporters asked the chief if he had acomfortable flight.
有名非洲酋長搭飛機(jī)到美國拜訪總統(tǒng)。他一抵達(dá)機(jī)場,就被一群新聞記者和電視攝影記者團(tuán)團(tuán)包圍。有名記者問酋長旅途是否舒適愉快。
The chief made a series of weird noises..."Screech,scratch, honk, buzz, whistle, Z-Z-Z-Z" and then added in perfect English, "Yes, I had a verynice flight."
酋長先發(fā)出一連串“嘰、刮、轟、叭、嘻吼、滋-滋-滋-滋”的奇怪聲音,然后用嫻熟的英語說道:“是的,旅途相當(dāng)舒適愉快。”
Another reporter asked, "Chief, do you plan to visit the Washington Monument while you're inthe areas."
另一位記者問道:“酋長,到這里來有打算參觀華盛頓紀(jì)念碑嗎?”
The chief made the same noises..."Screech, scratch, honk, buzz, whistle, Z-Z-Z-Z" and thensaid, "Yes, and I also plan to visit the White House and the Capital Building."
酋長又發(fā)出同樣“嘰、刮、轟、叭、嘻吼、滋-滋-滋-滋”的怪聲,然后說:“是的,我也打算參觀白宮和國會大廈。”
"Where did you learn to speak such flawless English?" asked the next reporter.
“你一口完美無暇的英語是在哪里學(xué)的啊?”下一個(gè)記者問道。
The chief replied, "Screech, scratch, honk, buzz, whistle, Z-Z-Z-Z... from the short-waveradio."
酋長回答:“嘰、刮、轟、叭、嘻吼、滋-滋-滋-滋...是從短波無線電臺學(xué)來的。”
