[00:02.17]Amundsen reached the Pole on 14 December
[00:05.66]and put a Norwegian flag there.
[00:08.64]Then he prepared for the return journey.
[00:11.65]Scott finally arrived at the Pole
[00:13.87]with four team members on 17 January.
[00:18.02]They were shocked when
[00:18.97]they saw the Norwegian flag.
[00:21.27]Scott wrote sadly in his diary:
[00:23.96]"Well, we have now lost the goal
[00:26.63]of our ambition and must face 800 miles
[00:30.48]of hard pushing
[00:32.67]and goodbye to most of our dreams."
[00:36.10]The return journey was one of the worst
[00:38.75]in the history of exploration.
[00:40.83]The men were soon exhausted
[00:42.60]and were running out of food.
[00:44.77]The weather conditions were terrible.
[00:47.18]Scott started to realize
[00:49.12]their hopeless situation:
[00:51.63]"...we are very cheerful,
[00:53.98]but what each man feels in his heart
[00:56.67]I can only guess.
[00:58.42]Putting on our shoes in the morning
[01:00.40]is getting slower and slower."
[01:03.40]However, on their way back they found time
[01:06.18]to look for rocks.
[01:07.67]They carried 20 kilos of rocks
[01:10.06]all the way with them.
[01:11.89]Later, these rocks proved that at one time
[01:15.00]in the distant past the Antarctic
[01:17.44]was covered by plants.
